Bergner’s suspect now in custody

Thursday, July 27, 2017

Here’s an update to a story that ran in a recent issue of Village Vision. On June 19, Macon County Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Beck told trustees about a vehicle pursuit of a suspect the week before that occurred on Weaver Road. Law enforcement made the decision to terminate the chase a short time after it started when it was determined it was too great of a threat to public safety.

The male suspect in the case, a parolee, was harassing a number of female employees at Bergner’s at Hickory Point Mall. He managed to avoid arrest and fled in an older white Cadillac.

Beck updated trustees at the July 17 meeting that authorities had caught up with the suspect and arrested him, adding that he was scheduled to appear in court July 19. Beck said that Decatur Police made the arrest in a Decatur tavern after receiving a tip.

“The guy is in custody and likely going back to prison,” Beck said in reference to the man’s criminal history and to the fact that the incident is considered a parole violation.

Beck added that the Bergner’s employees would now be able to go to work without worrying.
