Classic decided in four-hole playoff

Thursday, June 28, 2018

The 54-hole Forsyth Classic was decided in extra holes late on a hot Sunday afternoon, June 17, at Hickory Point Golf Course.

Isi Gabsa from Munich, Germany, won for the first time on the Symetra Tour when she birdied the fourth playoff hole to secure the victory over Jillian Hollis from Rocky River, Ohio. Gabsa’s putt earned her the winner’s check of $19,500 and marked an exciting finish to the 34th annual Forsyth Classic presented by the Decatur Park District.

Gabsa was one shot out of the lead when the final round began. She shot 2-under-par, 70, to send her into a playoff with Hollis, a rookie. Both players finished regulation play at 13-under par before going back to the tee at the final hole to begin the sudden-death playoff. They played No. 18 (No. 9 when the tournament is not being played) until there was a winner. Gabsa made a birdie for the win on the fourth time through.

The Forsyth Classic, the longest running tournament on the LPGA’s developmental tour, attracts a field of 144 players from the United States and around the world. Players compete for a purse of $130,000 and an opportunity to play on the LPGA Tour.

Next year the tournament celebrates its 35th year, with the Village returning as title sponsor.
