Final rounds coming for Forsyth Classic

Thursday, February 28, 2019

In a press release from early February that included the 2019 schedule for the Symetra Tour, Mike Nichols, chief business officer of the tour, also made an official announcement regarding the Forsyth Classic.

When the Symetra Tour arrives at Hickory Point Golf Course this June, it will be the curtain call for an event that has hosted “Road to the LPGA” professionals for 35 of the Tour’s 39 years of existence, the press release stated.

“I’ve been adamant that when the time came for Decatur to bid farewell that we do it in a proactive way so that we can celebrate the community’s contribution to the growth of this tour,” Nichols said. “The last thing I wanted to do was have it end with a press release in the middle of winter. In the near future, we will be making announcements about some special activities to make this an unforgettable week saying not only goodbye, but thank you.”

The 35th annual Forsyth Classic presented by the Village of Forsyth and the Decatur Park District will be contested June 14-16.

Tournament Director Cindy Deadrick Wolfer, who has been with the tournament since the beginning, told media outlets following the news that she and a group of volunteers will continue to seek funding sponsors for a possible return of the event.

The Village of Forsyth, a longtime tournament sponsor, committed $90,000 to the tournament in 2018 and has committed $100,000 to this year’s tournament. The Village is the lone title sponsor for both years.
