Fire damages outside wall at Kohl’s

Thursday, June 14, 2018

Cigarette suspected as the likely cause

Firefighters from Hickory Point Fire Protection District were called to put out a fire at Hickory Point Mall on June 3. The flames, according to witnesses and media reports, appear to have started in a landscaped area near the building’s south entrance. When firefighters arrived, flames had engulfed some landscaping, and thick smoke was billowing about the area.

According to posts on the Argenta-Oreana Fire Department Facebook page, the fire was contained to the building’s exterior, and the likely cause was a careless smoker. The call came in at 1:18 p.m.

Other responding agencies included fire departments from Maroa and Warrensburg, Decatur Ambulance and the Macon County Sheriff’s Office.

Hickory Point Fire Chief Josh Trendler told the local newspaper that the fire wasn’t likely set intentionally, and therefore not criminal, but “it certainly could’ve been prevented.”

Some landscaping was lost, and a wide section of the building’s outside wall was damaged.
