Forsyth Park welcomes spring weather, activities

As spring moves closer on the calendar, Forsyth Park starts to buzz with activity.
Donna and Kyle May own Fleet Feet Sports in Decatur. And, since 2002, they have been the owners of Spin City Cycles. Both businesses operate out of their building at 1090 West Wood St.
Active in the fitness community, the Mays like to train runners preparing for upcoming races through their Half Marathon Training Program. To that end, lately they’ve been gathering with their latest group of trainees in Forsyth Park to get them prepared for the challenges and demands of distance running.
On a recent brisk, pre-spring day, a group of about 20 runners, including Steve Ragan, who serves as an alternate on the Village’s Planning and Zoning Commission, took off on what Donna May called a “four-and-a-half-mile tempo run.” A tempo run, she explained, is a little faster than the normal pace they’ll run in the actual race.
Donna May said the group is in training for the Illinois Half Marathon coming up in April at U of I. The race starts near State Farm Center, and the finish line is at the 50-yard line of Memorial Stadium.
Like these ambitious runners, as the weather improves, take advantage of Forsyth Park and the Village’s walking trails. It’s easy to see how these amenities add to the quality of life for the entire community.
