Higher-efficiency LED lights approved by Village

Thursday, February 14, 2019

A pretty major project got started in the last few weeks that will be good for the environment and good for the Village and its taxpayers.

All Village-owned exterior lighting — including at pavilions, concession stands, Forsyth Park, Village Hall, the water treatment plant, the maintenance building and on walking trails — is being replaced with LED lighting. The interior lighting at Forsyth Public Library is also being replaced. The project is expected to be complete by the end of March. The reason for the switch is to lower electric costs for the Village.

Jerry Johnson of Energy Saving Solutions, Inc. in Decatur spoke to trustees about the project at the January 7 Board meeting. The new lighting will carry a 10-year warranty, and a majority of the cost is being reimbursed through an incentive program offered by Ameren.

Johnson had two proposals: one for the library and a second one that included lighting in the park, maintenance building, water plant and Village Hall.

The first proposal, for the library, costs $18,358, with a rebate of $13,997 from Ameren. The second proposal costs $26, 844, with 100-percent rebate from Ameren. The resulting initial cost of $4,361 to the Village should be recouped in savings in about 4 ½ months.

In addition, Johnson said his company offers a 10-year labor warranty. He predicted substantial maintenance savings going forward with the new lighting and about $1,000 per month savings due to the efficiency of the product, which he brought a sample of for his presentation.

“LEDs last hundreds of thousands of hours,” Johnson said. “The light levels will increase two to four times.”

Public Works Director Larry Coloni called the new lighting “impressive” and added: “This is a great opportunity for the Village to increase energy efficiency without spending a large amount of taxpayers’ money.”

All votes were Yea; the measure carried.
