Salt Vault

Thursday, June 15, 2017

What do you do with all that road salt when the weather is nice? Since April, and the start of nice weather, Public Works Director Larry Coloni reported to trustees that the Village is in receipt of its allocation of road salt for next winter. A mere 75 tons of the stuff is currently stored in the salt dome at Smith and Fitch streets.

In a normal year, the Village goes through about 100 tons of salt, but this year, Coloni said, only about 25 tons were used.

Coloni said the Village participates in a salt purchase contract with the state and has to determine in March how much salt will be needed for the following winter. He added that the state negotiates with salt vendors on behalf of the local governing bodies that participate in the program.
