Trustee Larry Reed dies at 76

Thursday, September 27, 2018

Longtime Village Board member, Larry Reed, passed away on September 9 at Decatur Memorial Hospital. Reed was 76.

The Village mourned his loss with a posting on its website that reads:

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Village Trustee Larry Reed. Larry worked generously and tirelessly for the Village of Forsyth. He served as a trustee on the Village Board for 15 years, as a trustee on the board of the Hickory Point Fire Protection District, as a member of the former Sunshine Rotary Club, and as perhaps our library’s biggest champion. The Mayor, Board, and all the employees of the Village extend our deepest sympathy to the Reed family.”

At the Board of Trustees meeting on September 17, Reed was honored with a moment of silence before the meeting began. His vacant seat at the table was adorned with a black ribbon and a single white rose.

Reed, a former educator, was known for his understated and thoughtful demeanor, for his effective governing and for his devotion to his family and community.

Mayor Marilyn Johnson, who had served with Reed since 2003, spoke of her shock at his loss and called him a friend. Reed and Johnson — due to their years of public service in Forsyth — were considered by many to be the unofficial institutional memory of Village Hall.

“Larry has been such a part of our community,” Johnson said. “He will be very much missed. He’s done so much for our community and was always there for whatever we needed.”
