Village adds defibrillators to key areas

Thursday, March 14, 2019

Last month, after a presentation by Trustee David Wendt, the Board approved the purchase of automated external defibrillators to be installed in key locations around the Village. The technology behind AEDs is designed to deliver a life-saving shock to someone who has gone into sudden cardiac arrest.

The original Defibtech AED model provides “the most advanced treatment” that is “so simple and unintimidating to use that even non-medical personnel can effectively save lives,” according to the manufacturer’s website.

It works in a straightforward way as “a calm voice leads the user through the rescue, clearly and concisely stating each instruction, one step at a time.”

Recently, staff from Public Works crew completed the installations of the AEDs in cabinets at the designated locations in the Village. Locations include: Forsyth Public Library; Forsyth Park at the high school diamond press boxes and the concession stand for Diamonds 1, 2 and 3; Public Works; Village Hall; and at the maintenance building.

In all, the Village purchased seven Defibtech brand AEDs, seven cabinets, seven two-way wall signs and two pediatric defib pads. The total bill was $9,940.32.

Trustee Kerry Denison, who is a registered nurse by training, called the AEDs “an excellent idea.”Fellow Board members agreed as all votes were Yea, and the measure carried.
